DMEA Executive Board High School Rep (2 year term)
- Michael Shaw (Roosevelt)
I would love to serve DMPS high school staff on the Executive Board of the DMEA. I have been a union member for the duration of my employment in this district; 9 years in total. It is my belief that everyone should join and support the union for “we” and not necessarily for “me”.
Historically, joining a union was dangerous business. Our great-grandparents would likely have been bullied, hassled, or injured for even trying to organize a union. We have the privilege to contribute to an organization that supports our livelihood financially, our families, and allows us to serve our students as professionals.
I would be honored to have your support and to serve you all as an Executive Board member. Thanks!

I am an English teacher and building rep at Lincoln High School in Des Moines. I’m proud to be a third generation union member. I am currently well-versed in the process and rules involved in policy-making and the governance of a democratic body. I am a precinct captain in Polk County and a member of Iowa Democratic Party’s 3rd District Central Committee. I was also presidential elector and a delegate for Bernie Sanders.
8. Courtney Starbuck (South Union)
I would love to represent DMEA at this year’s NEA Delegate Assembly in Boston, MA. I was fortunate to be elected to represent Iowa last year in Washington DC. Being a representative at the largest decision making body in the world is an honor I take very seriously. Please vote for me! Thank you, Courtney Starbuck.
