DMEA History

The first known record of the Association, known then as the Des Moines Federation of Teachers, appears in the Des Moines Schools Directory, 1918-19. No records indicate the number of teachers who were members, but apparently, 30 persons were responsible for the organization and formation of the Federation.

The name was changed to the Des Moines Education Association in 1948. The change in name was thought necessary because it was felt the word "Federation" gave the impression that the group was affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers. DMEA has been affiliated with the National Education Association since 1921 and with the Iowa State Education Association since 1922.

One of the first standing committees was the Planning Committee. It was started in the latter 1920's to discuss problems of teachers and education. It was made up of teachers and administrators. The Salary Committee was formed during the 1930's. Other committees were soon added bringing the total number to 16.

The organizations first constitution was drafted in 1933. During this time DMEA started its first official publication Review and Previews. The name was changed to the Journal in 1957. In 1976 the current publication, the Tempo was started as a bi-weekly publication.

The first Executive Director of DMEA was Nathaniel Hyland who served from 1959-60. The earliest records of dues indicate that members were charged $1 each to join.
